INFERNO COME FROM BEHIND TO WIN

The Guildford Inferno turned an indifferent first half performance into a second half blow-out, en route to a 5-2 win over the Golden Ears Force in Girls under-18 soccer action.  After spotting the Force an early lead, Guildford equalized when Kendra McIntosh sent Kaneisha Andrews down the left wing, and her cutback was converted by Chantelle McCulloch.  The Force stormed back and retook the lead within three minutes, but it was a short-lived advantage.  Almost immediately after the restart, McIntosh again started a scoring move, springing Esha Sidhu up the centre of the pitch.  Sidhu chipped the ball over the back line, for McCulloch to race onto and score her second of the match.  Continued attacks produced many chances but no goals, although Hanna Barrett and Jacqui Bodwell both went close.

The second half began with a bang.  Just four minutes in, Bodwell, now in goal, launched a long punt downfield, where Priya Sall trapped it and immediately sent Rebecca Morgan on a breakaway to give Guildford their first lead.  Guildford piled on the pressure after the goal, and both Danny Pozzobon and Paven Sandhar forced the Pitt Meadows keeper into saves.  The lead was doubled on the hour mark, when Andrews picked out Sidhu in midfield, and she weaved her way through three would-be tacklers before smashing a shot into the roof of the net.  The Force mounted a brief comback midway through the half, but Bodwell was equal to everything fired at her.  The Inferno’s final goal came ten minutes from time, when Bodwell came all the way downfield to take a free kick.  Her piledriver was barely saved, and Morgan was on hand to poke the rebound home.

Other strong efforts came from Michelle Birston, Harleen Gill, Olivia Jones, and Natasha Minenok.

INFERNO TORCH DOLPHINS

A strong team effort saw the Guildford Inferno dispatch the Vancouver Dolphins 4-0, in Girls U18 Division 3 play.  Despite totally dominating play in the first half, the Inferno were unable to open the scoring until nearly half time.  Kendra McIntosh intercepted a clearance and sent the ball forward to Paven Sandhar, who turned around her defender and buried a strong finish.  McIntosh was involved in the next goal as well, midway into the second half, when she set Stephanie Szerapka free on the right wing, and her attempted cross managed to roll past everybody and into the net.  Five minutes later, a lovely passing play saw Rebecca Morgan move the ball out of the corner to Hanna Barrett, who in turn set up Priya Sall at the top of the box to blast home a powerful shot.  Morgan then rounded out the scoring ten minutes from time, tapping in Kaneisha Andrews' perfect cross.  Jacqui Bodwell was not called upon often in the Inferno goal, but was there when needed to earn the clean sheet.  Other players with strong games were Kiana Lavallee, Aileen Tran, Daniella Pozzobon, and Chantelle McCulloch.

MORGAN INSPIRES INFERNO VICTORY

Two second half goals from Rebecca Morgan led the Guildford Inferno to an exciting 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Abbotsford Rockets, in U-18 Third Division girls action.  Despite controlling much of the first half, the Inferno spotted the Rockets a two goal half-time lead.  But early in the second half, Morgan ran onto a through ball from Daniella Pozzobon and slid it past the keeper to cut the Abbotsford lead to one.  With fifteen minutes left, Morgan scored her second, converting Chantelle McCulloch's cross.  And seven minutes later, Paven Sandhar completed the comeback, scoring off the rebound from a drive by Priya Sall.  In addition to her two goals, Morgan also had a first-half goal ruled out on a close offside call.  Jacqueline Bodwell kept a second-half clean sheet for the Inferno, and other strong efforts came from Navdeep Gill, Stephanie Szerapka, and Aileen Tran.

POZZOBON HAT-TRICK LEADS INFERNO TO WIN

Three goals from Daniella Pozzobon and a pair from Paven Sandhar helped the Guildford Inferno to a thrilling 5-4 win over the Langley Predators, in U-18 Third Division girls action.  Pozzobon opened the scoring early in the match, converting a cross from Sandhar.  Langley then scored twice to take a 2-1 lead at half time.  Almost immediately after the restart, Sandhar ran onto a superb pass from Kaneisha Andrews and slipped the ball inside the post to even the score.  Pozzobon's turn was next, and she restored Guildford's lead by rocketing home a 20 yard drive off an assist from Hanna Barrett.  Sandhar added her second on the prettiest play of the match, beating the offside trap to reach an inch-perfect chip from Jessica Jawanda and bang it in off the post.  Langley roared back, lobbing the Guildford keeper from a sharp angle and then scoring from a goalmouth scramble to knot the score again.  But with just ten minutes remaining, Pozzobon completed her hat-trick by intercepting a clearance and hammering it back into the corner of the net.  Goalkeeper Jacqui Bodwell made two important saves to preserve the lead, as Langley fought in vain to tie it at the death.  Other strong efforts from the Inferno came from Olivia Jones, Priya Sall, and Amber Vanderpol.
